Gimjang

Gimjang (김장 – pronounced “kim jông”) is the traditional process of preparing and preserving kimchi in the wintertime after the fall harvest, a shared experience where large groups of people (family, friends, neighbors) make kimchi together to share. Just as kimchi is meant to be shared, the experience of making kimchi is also meant to be shared, which is why Korean grandmothers and mothers will typically teach their daughters, granddaughters, and daughter-in-laws how to make kimchi by making kimchi together rather than providing written recipes.

Gimjang (or kimjang) was officially inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2013.
